The safest purchasing rule

Buy against the grade and standard on the approved drawing or specification. An “equivalent” name is a useful search clue, but it is not a substitute for confirming chemistry, condition, dimensions, treatment route, and service requirements.

Choose the family before the grade

Steel families organise broad tooling and service needs. The final grade still needs application-specific approval.

How to read grade names

The same material family may be described using AISI, DIN/Werkstoff, EN, JIS, trade, or manufacturer-specific designations.

Standard designations

Names such as H13, D2, M2, and O1 are commonly searched using AISI-style designations.

Werkstoff numbers

Numeric names such as 1.2344 or 1.2379 identify grades within European cross-reference systems.

JIS and regional names

Names such as SKD61 or SKH51 may appear on drawings or supplier documents for corresponding regional standards.

Proprietary grades

Manufacturer names such as KDAMAX, NOGA, PHX SUPRA, or Toolox must be checked against the original datasheet.

Cross-references are not purchase approval

Two designations may be commonly described as equivalents while still differing in permissible chemistry, cleanliness, manufacturing route, testing, delivery condition, or tolerances. Confirm the approved standard and revision before substitution.

Are AISI, DIN, EN, and JIS steel grades always directly equivalent?

No. Cross-reference names can be useful for discovery, but chemistry ranges, condition, manufacturing route, and revision may differ. Use the approved drawing or material specification for purchasing.

What is the difference between a steel family and a steel grade?

A family groups materials by broad service or processing characteristics, such as hot work or cold work steel. A grade is a specific designation with defined requirements under a standard or manufacturer specification.

Should heat treatment be included in a steel RFQ?

Include the required delivery condition whenever it is specified. Final heat-treatment parameters should come from the approved grade datasheet, tool designer, or heat-treatment specialist.
